Belle Epoque - New Flourishing of the Piano Lied

  • Lieder of Transition (1885–1914).

  • Natur und Nacht is the first CD in the new LiedGUT series, which explores the development of 20th-century (art) song composition.

  • Tenor Lutz Pfingsten, who is also conceptually responsible for the series, and soprano Rita Anton, accompanied by Heiko Holtmeier on piano, interpret…

  • …works by Hugo Wolf, Franz Schreker, Rudi Stephan, Alban Berg, Richard Strauss, and Sigfrid Karg-Elert.

  • The works were composed between 1880 and the First World War, a period known as Fin de Siècle or Belle Epoque.

  • During this time, the piano lied experienced a new flourishing, which is documented on this CD through selected lieder by German and Austrian composers.

  • A unifying feature of this selection, in addition to the theme of erotic relationships, is an Art Nouveau-inspired indulgence in imagery of nature and night.

  • An outstanding recording with an exceptional program.

  • Recorded in the Jesus-Christus-Kirche, Berlin-Dahlem
